AI + 3D Vision-Guided Laser Marking of Highly Reflective Metal Parts

Customer Demand

A leading auto parts manufacturer required an automated solution for laser marking of multiple types of complex-shaped, highly reflective metal parts. Due to the similarity in appearance among different part models and the variation in incoming part orientations, traditional automation methods struggled to achieve reliable part identification and accurate marking. The customer needed a flexible vision-guided robotic solution that could automatically distinguish different parts, locate precise marking positions, and perform high-accuracy laser marking without relying on dedicated fixtures or manual alignment.

Workflow:

Powered by Mech-Mind’s embodied intelligence “Eye + Brain” solution (including high-precision 3D cameras and AI software suites), the system enables robots to autonomously recognize, pick, position, and laser-mark metal parts.

The high-precision 3D camera captures 3D point clouds of incoming parts on the conveyor, enabling accurate part identification and vision-guided robot picking. After picking, the system performs a second vision check to precisely locate the marking position on the picked part.

Based on the vision results, the robot automatically adjusts its pose and guides the laser marker to complete accurate marking before placing the finished part at the designated location.

Advantages:

  1. Mech-Eye PRO S-GL high-precision 3D camera captures high-quality 3D point clouds of reflective cylindrical metal parts, enabling ±0.5 mm visual positioning accuracy for reliable laser marking.
  2. AI-powered part recognition accurately distinguishes similar-looking metal parts across multiple specifications, enabling flexible handling of diverse parts.
  3. Secondary vision verification precisely locates the marking position on the picked parts, compensating for variations in part orientation.
  4. The system supports multiple part types without complex fixture customization, enabling quick adaptation to changing production needs.
  5. Intelligent robot guidance enables collision-free path planning and stable pick-and-mark operations.

Results:

  • Achieved accurate identification and handling of multiple metal part types.
  • Enabled precise laser marking through automated secondary vision positioning.
  • Improved production flexibility and reduced dependency on manual alignment.
  • Increased marking consistency and overall production efficiency.
