3D Vision-Guided Machine Tending of Brake Discs

Customer Demand

When it comes to handling brake discs, one of the trickiest hurdles is dealing with the close-packed arrangement of these circular components. They often overlap so tightly that it becomes quite a challenge to distinguish one from the other and obtain accurate recognition. Another challenge lies in the design of corrugated steel pallet crates on-site. As brake discs are retrieved from these crates, the crate's wavy walls can lead to discs becoming stuck during removal. This, in turn, exacerbates the challenge of achieving precise 3D matching, impacting the overall efficiency of the process. The customer requires the Mech-Mind 3D vision system to guide the robot to accurately pick up brake discs and stably place them on different conveyor lines based on their orientation (front or back).

Mech-Mind AI + 3D Vision Solution

3D Vision-Guided Machine Tending of Brake Discs

The Mech-Mind solution

  1. Mech-Eye LSR L-GL provides a wide FOV and high accuracy, capturing high-quality 3D point clouds of overlapping brake discs with fine details.

  2. The 3D vision system distinguishes brake discs' front and back sides and guides the robot to pick and place each disc precisely.

  3. Utilizing the advanced "Remove Overlapped Objects" algorithm, Mech-Vision ensures accurate matching and recognition of each brake disc.

  4. Motion planning algorithms for collision-free and seamless operations.

The result

The fully automated brake disc handling process results in improved efficiency and workplace safety.
